Panelist Biographies

John E. Morton
Investment Officer
Global Environment Fund

John E. Morton joined Global Environment Fund as an Investment Officer in 2002 after having spent several months living in South Africa working with a GEF portfolio company on a series of early-stage post-acquisition turn-around initiatives. In addition to leading the firm’s clean energy and clean technology practice, Mr. Morton has been active in structuring follow-on financing packages for core investments within the firm’s emerging markets portfolio. Specifically, Mr. Morton helped to arrange, structuring, and negotiate a $40 million third-party debt investment in the Indian natural gas sector and to raise $20 million in equity for an investment in the South African forestry sector. Prior to joining GEF, Mr. Morton worked as a management consultant with Mercer Management Consulting, based in Boston. At Mercer, Mr. Morton specialized in identifying strategic business design opportunities and developing innovative business responses to capitalize on evolving market trends. His industry experience included healthcare, telecom, computing, retail, media, and financial services.

Before joining Mercer, Mr. Morton spent several years at the World Bank where he was engaged in managing significant investments in the environmental and infrastructure sectors in Georgia and Moldova. His management responsibilities included investment identification and design, financial negotiations, and program implementation.

Mr. Morton lives in Washington DC where he tutors students at the Maya Angelou Charter School, volunteers with the AdamsMorgan MainStreet urban revitalization program, and serves as the Treasurer of the Stafford Owners, Inc., a housing cooperative. Fluent in Russian and French, Mr. Morton has lived and worked in countries on four continents.

Mr. Morton received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in Finance and an MA in International Economics from the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies. Mr. Morton graduated with honors from Harvard College with a BA in Russian History and Literature.
