Stephen A. Schwarzman is President, CEO and Co-Founder of The Blackstone Group. He has been involved in all phases of the firm's development since its founding in 1985 and approves all capital commitments by the firm. The Blackstone Group is one of the largest alternative asset managers in the world, having raised $14 billion for alternative asset investing since 1987. In addition to its four hedge funds with $2 billion of assets, Blackstone currently is investing five private equity funds with investable assets of over $9 billion comprised of:

  • $4 billion in general corporate private equity through Blackstone Capital Partners IIII, the largest private equity fund, raised in 1997;
  • $2 billion for communications-related private equity transactions through Blackstone Communications Partners. This fund co-invests with BCP III, providing a pool of $4 billion for communications investments;
  • $1.1 billion for mezzanine investing through Blackstone Mezzanine Partners;
  • $2 billion for real estate investing through Blackstone Real Estate Partners III and Blackstone Real Estate Partners International. Together, these two funds will have $1 billion to invest in Western Europe.
The firm is currently raising its fourth general private equity fund, Blackstone Capital Partners IV, in addition to Blackstone Real Estate Partners International.

Mr. Schwarzman began his career at Lehman Brothers, where he was elected Managing Director in 1978 at the age of 31. He was engaged principally in the firm's mergers and acquisitions business from 1977 to 1984, and served as Chairman of the firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Committee in 1983 and 1984.

Mr. Schwarzman is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is on the Boards of the New York City Ballet, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and the Harvard Business School Visiting Committee. He is also a Director of various companies. Mr. Schwarzman holds a B.A. from Yale University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Yale School of Management.
