
Charles Lax Managing General Partner GrandBanks Capital/ SOFTBANK
Mr. Lax is the founder and Managing General Partner of GrandBanks Capital, a new venture fund established in partnership with SOFTBANK Venture Capital focusing on early stage companies on the east coast of the United States. Mr. Lax is a co-founder and a General Partner of both SOFTBANK Venture Capital, a multi-stage venture capital firm and SOFTBANK Capital Partners, a strategic late-stage fund. He is also a Director of SOFTBANK Investment America Corporation.
Charley emphasizes investments in Internet infrastructure, digital media, eFinance and electronic commerce. He has sponsored and managed investments by SOFTBANK in such Internet infrastructure companies including Art Technology Group (ARTG), Backweb (BKWB), Interliant (INIT), Webhire (HIRE) and Personalogic (sold to AOL) and Coradiant. His media investments include GeoCities (sold to Yahoo!), Gamesville (sold to Lycos), Third Age Media, TheStreet.com (TSCM. His eFinance investments include InvesTools (sold to Telescan), Multex Systems (MLTX). His electronic commerce investments include Impulse Buy Network (sold to Inktomi), Global Sports (GSPT), 1800Flowers.com (FLWS) and Clearcross and Coradiant
In addition, Mr. Lax also co-created Flatiron Partners, a New York City-based Venture Partnership created by SOFTBANK and Chase Capital Partners and was a member of its investment management committee.
Prior to the creation of SOFTBANK Venture Capital, Charley served as a Vice President of SOFTBANK Holdings Inc., the predecessor venture investment arm of SOFTBANK. Charley was the first investment manager hired to focus solely on venture investments by SOFTBANK.
Mr. Lax currently serves on the board of directors of several public and private companies including Interliant (INIT), 1800Flowers.com (FLWS), Webhire (HIRE), Clearcross and Coradiant. He also serves as an advisor to Seed Capital Partners, Ironside Ventures and VIMAC LLC.
Mr. Lax is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston University where he earned a Bachelor of Science.
